<br />
In recent years however, it seems clear that clients have less and less time to spend looking at anything not directly related to what they're looking for. Naturally, they tend to gravitate to artists with singular focused style.<br />
<br />
This is nothing new, of course- but due mostly to laziness, I've managed to make due with just a single site up til now. However, thanks to the site tools of Wix.com I've managed to make my own site in a fairly easy fashion, and can now unveil my new portfolio of cinematic works!<br />
<br />

<br />
More updates to come soon, including a stylized website as well as hopefully a facebook artist page as well...stay tuned! <br />

here's a quick environmental scene of power generators on a waterfall I did this week-about 6-7 hours total, most of which was spent doing alot of little value sketches such as these:<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis5kUoURzNlZuFGdwEzKLOXnhvgkky265GpRlQy0UIBNfCsf-DG4BJMVyzIhTsarlOBDljIpnHM4i0VbHC0MMUtN6e3e80DuEubM7AckOYVA6plJVZMI9CTI993D7WauKXZQpoYeaH5KD9/s1600/T+Gomez-castle+BG01.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis5kUoURzNlZuFGdwEzKLOXnhvgkky265GpRlQy0UIBNfCsf-DG4BJMVyzIhTsarlOBDljIpnHM4i0VbHC0MMUtN6e3e80DuEubM7AckOYVA6plJVZMI9CTI993D7WauKXZQpoYeaH5KD9/s1600/T+Gomez-castle+BG01.JPG" height="320" width="201" /></a></div>
<br />
And now for my last paint over from the IDEA Academy workshop, the work of <a href="http://tommasogomez.com/Tommaso_Gomez_Artworks/WELCOME.html" target="_blank">Tommaso Gomez</a>, a longtime industry vet and a great all around artist, as you can see from his environmental study (and website)<br />
<br />
Since Tommaso's painting is technically quite sharp, for this post I'll focus a bit more on composition in service of storytelling-this is an area that even seasoned pros can always work on- myself included. Tommaso's piece shows us a castle high up on a mountain ridge and the there's alot to like in the piece- the division and distribution of light and dark shapes is terrific and the light is working nicely. <br />
<br />
At this point I would turn my attention to figuring out what this scene is all about- is this the fortress of some evil ruler? or a peaceful kingdom? or an ancient ruin? To help to find these answers, I want to first do a couple subtle adjustments so that we can lead the eye where we want it to go.<br />
<br />
Much of art theory is about leading the viewer's eye through the placement of elements in the scene. One of the simplest compositional guides is known as the Rule of Thirds, in which you divide the canvas into thirds vertically and horizontally, and the areas of interest should be close to the intersections. This is a principle that has been used by classical painters and film makers alike, and it's a good starting point for concept artists as well.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOXnvggmUhjeuVM78nWbTrV-IOpn-IVovWbkXXTFAJKZtmLRMVy0fYrYpoitF2yO6mbc09MXfXki31Sb8ubi4maaVsZr6hQ-r_i5ndUwrpTrZP4I-W_CmH4U72fWHkANRK4NA-Ul9JUmgx/s1600/T+Gomez-castle+BG05.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOXnvggmUhjeuVM78nWbTrV-IOpn-IVovWbkXXTFAJKZtmLRMVy0fYrYpoitF2yO6mbc09MXfXki31Sb8ubi4maaVsZr6hQ-r_i5ndUwrpTrZP4I-W_CmH4U72fWHkANRK4NA-Ul9JUmgx/s1600/T+Gomez-castle+BG05.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFLBoigfk4wusdDQg32s9v_RKwv6THJOtPa8YWPx9sVWUYdyQ2bma3DapHKztWQDaB11P1N0HyGo2YDXL2dwKuxPu_G4G-y0HCasaHlPaobIn_41BN_tTOo9saY87lS6SXe4FyZNYESvqt/s1600/T+Gomez-castle+BG06.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFLBoigfk4wusdDQg32s9v_RKwv6THJOtPa8YWPx9sVWUYdyQ2bma3DapHKztWQDaB11P1N0HyGo2YDXL2dwKuxPu_G4G-y0HCasaHlPaobIn_41BN_tTOo9saY87lS6SXe4FyZNYESvqt/s1600/T+Gomez-castle+BG06.JPG" height="209" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
As we can see on Tomasso's scene, the castle is just a bit high and right, which can cause the viewer to linger in other places rather than the focal areas<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0j_Vg_O-UZL_Lyqd2NHqetP3evn6PoaqLrIWwgNHimSekJMD9lZzzneWCgR0fjie3pWJQWrZIJMWvvgPWeDpRP7-jmN1Kwu-sTViTGbZshtjeTm-HIBg_J9mrzq0qOlTDr9PZEevqHDxn/s1600/T+Gomez-castle+BG02.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0j_Vg_O-UZL_Lyqd2NHqetP3evn6PoaqLrIWwgNHimSekJMD9lZzzneWCgR0fjie3pWJQWrZIJMWvvgPWeDpRP7-jmN1Kwu-sTViTGbZshtjeTm-HIBg_J9mrzq0qOlTDr9PZEevqHDxn/s1600/T+Gomez-castle+BG02.JPG" height="320" width="201" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
To address this I'm going to move the castle area slightly. I'm also going to add a secondary area of interest lower on the page ( near the lower left focal area ) to give the eye another opportunity to learn more about this scene. Using the Rule of Thirds is especially useful to convey a sense of balance and stability which is something which seems appropriate to the scene.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTvb6o6LvHVD7o0sSVijnjZu7QCp8wdx_wGsJHZkTd2hByLoOsP8byN-EgZyXPULbjMOcYqLM2oyC5mu2pq_taUlooR-v7exNWn68VXJuAtgj6y2jHUF4I-qFXWxXWQcan5Wxi-YXlvMU-/s1600/T+Gomez-castle+BG03.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTvb6o6LvHVD7o0sSVijnjZu7QCp8wdx_wGsJHZkTd2hByLoOsP8byN-EgZyXPULbjMOcYqLM2oyC5mu2pq_taUlooR-v7exNWn68VXJuAtgj6y2jHUF4I-qFXWxXWQcan5Wxi-YXlvMU-/s1600/T+Gomez-castle+BG03.JPG" height="320" width="201" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
In addition to those changes, I'm also lightening the darks of the castle and some other areas to increase the distance and scale- notice we basically have 3-4 levels of distances ( see the previous paintover for more on that ) We could even continue creating a literal path leading the eye from the lower structure to the higher one to guide the eye up.<br />
<br />
Now that the elements are framed more prominently, we are free to consider more what the scene is about- for example, if this is a tranquil scene showing a peaceful mountaintop monastery, we can introduce a warm light and some birds to create a nice establishing shot.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYJxa6DkhEg561OhpH6l5vzG8xJkBsQe6PBi0BDR1LwgAtvSdSR4omdkzeUdZeNYRIG3SznR33LRboVKESywal-dh9_52Lu_VLKUqMjhFhiXld4wN0DAMX3UtNoJGXx7Fe0TVV3oA6Z6AE/s1600/T+Gomez-castle+BG04.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYJxa6DkhEg561OhpH6l5vzG8xJkBsQe6PBi0BDR1LwgAtvSdSR4omdkzeUdZeNYRIG3SznR33LRboVKESywal-dh9_52Lu_VLKUqMjhFhiXld4wN0DAMX3UtNoJGXx7Fe0TVV3oA6Z6AE/s1600/T+Gomez-castle+BG04.JPG" height="320" width="201" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
As always, the choices I've made here are not necessarily the 'best' ones- ultimately it's up to you to decide to fill in the story, and that will guide your choices. happy painting!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16023362896375404504noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5262627383609154324.post-48870279861153849212015-03-02T15:22:00.003-08:002015-03-02T15:22:59.366-08:00March Paintover: Studies in Grey<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Hey guys, sorry for the long absence but the last two months have been pretty busy! Fortunately I'm back on track and I've got two crits left from our workshop! And first up is a very quick paintover for Stephania from the IDEA Academy workshop.<br />
<br />
Before that I wanted to talk a bit about working in greyscale. When I first starting drawing and painting at the college level, my teachers had us working only in charcoal. This tradition goes back to the earliest art academies, where it was taught ( and still is ) that painting is 90% drawing. The result of working in grayscale is that you develop a strong sense of depth and graphic patterns without the distraction of color. Above is one of my charcoal pieces where I was very much concerned from the beginning with the interplay of light and dark shapes<br />
<br />
turning now to our next paintover, I see that Stephania 's environmental sketch could benefit from some value adjustment. The first thing to do is simply to turn down the saturation to see how this looks without the color ( note: this is not a 100% accurate way to see your values, but for our purposes it's close enough ).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggnRVfXHZseidJUNfmC44Vg4Bd3lK9vUTnQ4XOCMkLYrvArQ4IjgVGcfFGroorh58NQ67IMxWJZ78LIv6u6fxwihLainVUi8GC9E-Kt1mB3LyAHOyi6MscD01IRjRZD8PHW5rTMJCt6t51/s1600/steph02.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggnRVfXHZseidJUNfmC44Vg4Bd3lK9vUTnQ4XOCMkLYrvArQ4IjgVGcfFGroorh58NQ67IMxWJZ78LIv6u6fxwihLainVUi8GC9E-Kt1mB3LyAHOyi6MscD01IRjRZD8PHW5rTMJCt6t51/s1600/steph02.JPG" height="224" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
As you can see, everything is kind of sitting in the middle gray range, so the quickest thing is to simply push the values lighter or darker- and the most basic way to do that is to use atmospheric perspective ( the tendency of objects to have more contrast as they get closer to the eye )<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOXZL_7jmV-owrh3xOXreNoDV6Tf9a7E41Ql9QKEUAuUlfdYOVpQ96Y9rPHC6Hfmlu0EGrqy-8MLaXOhZVEIUCh0RbqYOPJ8VndIk0Z_nL1dDabzfzQy-9b4kWTq9z9KfmPBWDGCftS0OX/s1600/steph03.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOXZL_7jmV-owrh3xOXreNoDV6Tf9a7E41Ql9QKEUAuUlfdYOVpQ96Y9rPHC6Hfmlu0EGrqy-8MLaXOhZVEIUCh0RbqYOPJ8VndIk0Z_nL1dDabzfzQy-9b4kWTq9z9KfmPBWDGCftS0OX/s1600/steph03.JPG" height="320" width="226" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Now, the different shapes are distinct from each other and sit in a space which make some kind of sense. This makes things much easier to 'read' visually, and sets you up to start breaking up the big shapes to take it to the level of render that you have in mind <br />
<br />
As always, I recommend starting with big simple shapes ( much of this I'm creating by simply using the selection tool ). Rending beyond this state is simply a matter of breaking the shapes into smaller and more precise shapes. Even the addition of some simple gradients also help to define the space better<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRKoiZJk0BGdBe0r4FyP8PMA_NtfjdX6Jm_Smr1TkVzsKfF9z29Yzl4hW4r6F_sleHu-9ymLKtceVUDpnGF3uyknCUdszBJouIfEIb0TP95KfGYb9Epy4myni-vcCDfeG-GegM2cTtBtuG/s1600/steph04.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRKoiZJk0BGdBe0r4FyP8PMA_NtfjdX6Jm_Smr1TkVzsKfF9z29Yzl4hW4r6F_sleHu-9ymLKtceVUDpnGF3uyknCUdszBJouIfEIb0TP95KfGYb9Epy4myni-vcCDfeG-GegM2cTtBtuG/s1600/steph04.JPG" height="320" width="226" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
So that's it for this lesson- I highly recommend going out and doing some value studies-I may do some myself!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRKoiZJk0BGdBe0r4FyP8PMA_NtfjdX6Jm_Smr1TkVzsKfF9z29Yzl4hW4r6F_sleHu-9ymLKtceVUDpnGF3uyknCUdszBJouIfEIb0TP95KfGYb9Epy4myni-vcCDfeG-GegM2cTtBtuG/s1600/steph04.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>

<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhM9Vv7x9piJaUQQoI9zMe3GIEB19AZoEY314_ZGFVRQWLwSMzAhVy4Ajyn2pA0d8RU-EhqYfaoZlyQPsHaEe2oz2IoQA60ExpdUQ42R5KMOarblTMCv1lvHENxsBTV_pVce-uAThyv3_2W/s1600/SaralloAnnalory01.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhM9Vv7x9piJaUQQoI9zMe3GIEB19AZoEY314_ZGFVRQWLwSMzAhVy4Ajyn2pA0d8RU-EhqYfaoZlyQPsHaEe2oz2IoQA60ExpdUQ42R5KMOarblTMCv1lvHENxsBTV_pVce-uAThyv3_2W/s1600/SaralloAnnalory01.JPG" height="202" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
If I recall correctly, Annalory is a bit new to working in digital media, so I'm glad to see her using some cool textured brushes in photoshop, but sometimes these brushes can be a distraction when setting up the fundamentals of your scene. For this reason we'll be taking this image down to simple color fields to make sure everything makes sense, and then we'll build it back up.<br />
<br />
In addition to reducing the image to simpler shapes, I'm also doing some color studies to see if we can capture a specific light in the scene. Currently everything is super saturated and could use some tweaking<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqF1jr4br-tpW4IulPS1vWCOvGE-3oLphT0YPvohCTLOHk4FiIs1AeSfEDcgqwVa22Z1RJ3es0tfNZa1FpAa2mcD01twNGcRC7Kqq5gDkv9L_3xeH8fVSiW3iSMsv5I2crTQPfE_QO0Sms/s1600/SaralloAnnalory02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqF1jr4br-tpW4IulPS1vWCOvGE-3oLphT0YPvohCTLOHk4FiIs1AeSfEDcgqwVa22Z1RJ3es0tfNZa1FpAa2mcD01twNGcRC7Kqq5gDkv9L_3xeH8fVSiW3iSMsv5I2crTQPfE_QO0Sms/s1600/SaralloAnnalory02.jpg" height="320" width="169" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
As you can see, reducing the image to simple shapes allows you to quickly try out color schemes easily. I use photo reference to give me inspiration for different type of daylight set ups. I could do dozens of these light studies to get exactly the look I want, but in this case I'll go with the closest one to her original image.<br />
<br />
Once we have that decided, we can go in a make more complex shapes and color grading- for example, the road that goes back into space is more believable when it's bent as it follows the contours of the landscape, and also as it's value and color are softened as it recedes in the distance.<br />

<br />
<br />
Once this is all in place, we can now go back with our fancy texture brushes and spice up the image- depending on the style you are working in, you may use very little texture, or you may use photomaterial. I'm using a simple hair brush to suggest the texture that was in the original. Always be mindful of going overboard with textures..it's very easy to do! When in doubt, less is often best!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-RGt_GdClPUl6nhXKPjw_orJYHR7f1nhd-XXnYBRrjrQM2oNJzTFIZkngZ4yUPpEzpNMhbtV7NEhNlMxraHl__CMQlWBISif8OzUrI9DIbL8-e2qRWgYFcNiZWppIXbridVrkrdM0wed9/s1600/Lorenzo+original.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-RGt_GdClPUl6nhXKPjw_orJYHR7f1nhd-XXnYBRrjrQM2oNJzTFIZkngZ4yUPpEzpNMhbtV7NEhNlMxraHl__CMQlWBISif8OzUrI9DIbL8-e2qRWgYFcNiZWppIXbridVrkrdM0wed9/s1600/Lorenzo+original.jpg" height="303" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
As we can see, Lorenzo has a good feel for light and space in many of these. Notice how the most successful studies have clearly defined spacial groups defined ( fore ground, middle ground and background ) as well as a clear sense of light. <br />
<br />
Since Lorenzo has a good grasp of these principles, I'll take this opportunity to talk a bit about staging as another way for you to make your pieces more successful<br />
<br />
If we take a look at study A, we see a fairly neutral camera angle- it's not high or low, wide or narrow angle lens. As a result, there's not alot of drama or emotion to this piece. But let's take a look at what would happen if we tweak the camera just a bit<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTTv2BtaUcEtmLHhakfE2xesvz3274aXYYiW3fHt-pSNLaP9UiyAMDILp7INRYefHZW6aMXsMcZnZCFC_cgx87Byv5aJ13HgLrASRyJ7-8hm-rYLvWhOav8QmhZpG-OO3HCiv6y0RMd7kO/s1600/Lorenzo+A.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTTv2BtaUcEtmLHhakfE2xesvz3274aXYYiW3fHt-pSNLaP9UiyAMDILp7INRYefHZW6aMXsMcZnZCFC_cgx87Byv5aJ13HgLrASRyJ7-8hm-rYLvWhOav8QmhZpG-OO3HCiv6y0RMd7kO/s1600/Lorenzo+A.JPG" height="178" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
As you can see in this sketch I've brought the camera way down low, to roughly eye level. Low camera angles are generally considered more 'intimate' because this is how humans view the world. As a result a view like this might communicate a more personal story- now this shot could be suitable for telling the story of a main character- perhaps this is the lake where he grew up, or maybe the top of the mountain is where he must travel to. Notice how a low angle makes it easier to create more dramatic space with foreground elements.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiT-cNEG5KzejLInLvBaxg08u4ynw66fXwijGQ6j-Ln4uZn8rV2barN3n7FUZTWaU4RSBkA_oSTc43STKviKUwCheVtSw99i6DYKBaUfzTm-Uq-nkcc6nQksaWE0E_r-2kuqVeyVS78uFyk/s1600/Lorenzo+B.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiT-cNEG5KzejLInLvBaxg08u4ynw66fXwijGQ6j-Ln4uZn8rV2barN3n7FUZTWaU4RSBkA_oSTc43STKviKUwCheVtSw99i6DYKBaUfzTm-Uq-nkcc6nQksaWE0E_r-2kuqVeyVS78uFyk/s1600/Lorenzo+B.JPG" height="178" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
In contrast, higher angles tend to be less personal. A shot like this could be used as an establishing shot ( the opening shot to the story or scene which gives the viewer a sense of the area where the story takes place ) to give an overview to Lorenzo's story- perhaps giving the history of this lake or introducing a small village at the edge of the lake where the hero comes from.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvP8FuFuK_BDiJ8ICv5GVIkJifHBORApT16aYEaCv-Vt1KjiT-jpRvhcfveNmp32cTTU56kn3BtpsdZM3KD30zvAs-hm5ZiHgjgfUdyUf1Xact0j77qEYCWaMH0JB8lC6SXHzJD1hfx3oN/s1600/Lorenzo+C.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvP8FuFuK_BDiJ8ICv5GVIkJifHBORApT16aYEaCv-Vt1KjiT-jpRvhcfveNmp32cTTU56kn3BtpsdZM3KD30zvAs-hm5ZiHgjgfUdyUf1Xact0j77qEYCWaMH0JB8lC6SXHzJD1hfx3oN/s1600/Lorenzo+C.JPG" height="178" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Finally, a way to make a static scene more dynamic is to tilt the camera a bit ( in English this sometimes called a 'dutch angle'). This gives a sense of movement and energy to the shot-as though the viewer is flying through the scene. It also can imply some kind of conflict or instability for this scene- Lorenzo's original lake seemed peaceful, but this lake seems like something's not quite right.<br />
<br />
These kinds of angles as part of a flyover shot are also sometimes used as an establishing shot as well.<br />
<br />
So, the point is: depending on the needs of your shot, you may want to consider changing the camera angle to help tell the story that you want to tell! Experiment with different angles to see what works best for you!<br />
<br />
Happy painting! <br />
Mirko's in class study shows an adventurer in a mountainous landscape.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIoKCrvXKkkcmW7dJlCgpl1B3s3CkllUwY53swZtvDrY9F47V6hNtGe9Nutev5qVeTrW2YRTDMl7VfAeDoegJl_GSJViynljQDOkYiVNKdXSZxP4PnbGiylWCMtH3XjoSySj9ucqZNcb7r/s1600/Environment_Mirko+PO1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIoKCrvXKkkcmW7dJlCgpl1B3s3CkllUwY53swZtvDrY9F47V6hNtGe9Nutev5qVeTrW2YRTDMl7VfAeDoegJl_GSJViynljQDOkYiVNKdXSZxP4PnbGiylWCMtH3XjoSySj9ucqZNcb7r/s320/Environment_Mirko+PO1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
While the space and tone are reading pretty good, I think we can push things a bit, but more importantly, I want to see if we can push the details a bit to imply a bit more narrative. <br />
<br />
More after the page break! <br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
Starting with the far background elements, I'm going to start by bringing a bit more contrast in by lighting the sky and drawing out a bit of detail on the castle.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxpfPpdnmbmExphJA6keargoOoy11ysoND__jk_1Gj3a6mCwe8lgbISazs30rBXU04UraoGgyQJ0Z0bZTyg2omLL13qD4Z39fOT950RZybQjQKrAzyBBeelTXfb6yjaToDmcP47H-576oU/s1600/Environment_Mirko+PO2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxpfPpdnmbmExphJA6keargoOoy11ysoND__jk_1Gj3a6mCwe8lgbISazs30rBXU04UraoGgyQJ0Z0bZTyg2omLL13qD4Z39fOT950RZybQjQKrAzyBBeelTXfb6yjaToDmcP47H-576oU/s320/Environment_Mirko+PO2.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Moving on to the middle ground, I'm going to expand on the idea of the waterfall, both as a visual element that will contrast with the main figure better, and also as a narrative element to help tell the story of the character- by putting something more visible in between him and his destination, we're going to show that he has a tough journey ahead of him<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwkYsNy3FXX6m9X8lyjrC2P9kP2rPwvdv__XKMRToMLBO9HpWu6LIYur_AOvnKONCBWvkGzKbL983_4FAAKDIdqWHiH-xThky_MrnKaU2gc3VtCVLxnLv3bD6iuJaK8W_7ehdZaOuj4f_u/s1600/Environment_Mirko+PO3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwkYsNy3FXX6m9X8lyjrC2P9kP2rPwvdv__XKMRToMLBO9HpWu6LIYur_AOvnKONCBWvkGzKbL983_4FAAKDIdqWHiH-xThky_MrnKaU2gc3VtCVLxnLv3bD6iuJaK8W_7ehdZaOuj4f_u/s320/Environment_Mirko+PO3.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Finally for the foreground I want to inject a bit of color to contrast with the stark greyish mountains. From a narrative point of view, it also communicates that perhaps the character is at a threshhold between the normal world and this new evil wastland which he must cross. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAChBCTVU29uGFSYFlntfp7K5bjb-K2Ek6rbSS0fjNC1OiEnmnDosfh5VAAnbCoIxqXrGvzOlMZukoekhNgpRV1KELKbnnHdgiIP43DEPEkr-hlVJlZ7BZNboWEMVUDbahRtBl21B3Hy0X/s1600/Environment_Mirko+PO4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAChBCTVU29uGFSYFlntfp7K5bjb-K2Ek6rbSS0fjNC1OiEnmnDosfh5VAAnbCoIxqXrGvzOlMZukoekhNgpRV1KELKbnnHdgiIP43DEPEkr-hlVJlZ7BZNboWEMVUDbahRtBl21B3Hy0X/s320/Environment_Mirko+PO4.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
Obviously, this narrative may not at all be what Mirko orginally had in mind, so these choices may not be the best for him. However, the main point is that by thinking about both composition and narrative, we can find ways to give our work more personality and impact very easily!<br />
<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQRc9kmdZ_-LUSsrXPs-2-UTburgWNXKxS24UxBhDKJQ6HIPRKBHhrZX42jBygNj-kFsleJDs-5epC-cdsVdoOwV4u70ueZ71wkDh3tEVqzW7ZfLHZADwux8NyFWuGCLe73SC4gnxb90lU/s1600/Annalisa+PO1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQRc9kmdZ_-LUSsrXPs-2-UTburgWNXKxS24UxBhDKJQ6HIPRKBHhrZX42jBygNj-kFsleJDs-5epC-cdsVdoOwV4u70ueZ71wkDh3tEVqzW7ZfLHZADwux8NyFWuGCLe73SC4gnxb90lU/s1600/Annalisa+PO1.JPG" height="320" width="201" /></a></div>
<br />
Annalisa had concepted a very cool character living in a barren futuristic world, and she started this piece as part of the environmental assignment. I like the mood she's created here, but I think we can push things a bit to make the scene read better, with just a few tweaks <br />
<br />
<br />
These would be my suggestions to help to establish a more epic feel, as well as to emphasize the graphic look she is leaning towards:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-vMc-dzw5dtmuXhIq2DymAwipxz3xC30m6fk5QEXRTWlvTq8V59N4lAwoxEZyjfZF42hhTLXsXYgklALiSFyUCXmRsmajW1A7nAQxbpPB7RFUVl2BksDSxwbs5u40O3ByZ8fWIjW09MYI/s1600/Annalisa+PO2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-vMc-dzw5dtmuXhIq2DymAwipxz3xC30m6fk5QEXRTWlvTq8V59N4lAwoxEZyjfZF42hhTLXsXYgklALiSFyUCXmRsmajW1A7nAQxbpPB7RFUVl2BksDSxwbs5u40O3ByZ8fWIjW09MYI/s1600/Annalisa+PO2.JPG" height="320" width="201" /></a></div>
<br />
1. The background mountains are all the same height in the composition, and are quite low- I'm going to bring them up and make them a bit uneven to give a better sense of depth and danger. I'm also going to touch up the furthest mountain to push it farther in the distance. Notice that with this light, I will give the mountains some details on the dark side, as well as a bit of direct rim lighting<br />
<br />
2. we want to give the sense that the character is really moving into the scene, so I'm going to create some compositional elements to lead the eye in that direction<br />
<br />
3. The artist created some really nice lines in the landscape to establish the space- I will simplify and enhance these lines<br />
<br />
4. Finally, I will adjust the tones and lighting on the character as well as her shadow to help place her in the scene.<br />
<br />
you can see the steps on this GIF<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjy4BJH0jNlfrjzRIxSexHtD1JDylUW1wgm3fp_gWzxC1cQ1A-n4yhTV3ecvH4wke97bEB8yYmMXWw_nHI4fz63H0ZfR4qvhJaTjxohB6P3Mk7DnkejmBiC9V7tSMFYeT63S5dYEAmDl8p0/s1600/Annalisa-PO.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjy4BJH0jNlfrjzRIxSexHtD1JDylUW1wgm3fp_gWzxC1cQ1A-n4yhTV3ecvH4wke97bEB8yYmMXWw_nHI4fz63H0ZfR4qvhJaTjxohB6P3Mk7DnkejmBiC9V7tSMFYeT63S5dYEAmDl8p0/s1600/Annalisa-PO.gif" height="320" width="201" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
and the final image ( with some simple lighting to give some extra epicness)!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0_aekaGgvc1W-TtUrw39Y0ZXT3W_U_tKftHqicgw9aiMx8iy7Nvidg_rvO0uZ_Zl5Rbzfh9UrC-siLKBmk6qiDrXgLtWR71llLx9Z8uvCStYRRO8Adlza5EarNj-EWFaWlASA0UzNE_ut/s1600/Annalisa+PO3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgo2-xkaRwhJXQYjEsSHTnQBFQIwLPS_IDdg4BRu5g3nCX_zr7P46LWYwoVINeZTgRY3aPE3LFl5Xb4fOL-wM7myY9DYe2N0WsEB9Du5WwI05FgN0FZtGtGfg_wPpgYw1rbr0Nqz7m4_yfn/s1600/Annalisa+PO4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
These are all really simple tweaks that any of you can use to help give you works that extra push! Now go out and paint!<br /><br />

<br />
here's his original:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKYNGqNtQ79YfaDorRU-Vjd4j8xBfw-Ujj4InuY9uFRy3y8-GCmFfG3h-dfA-HHpFOZ20XQEHngff1K_frPM_Z_jXr7OykWRXE_HRBZZ3N_o0II1AtBujLaveeHW-MIMO6ZjhKeFkpS75u/s1600/Emre+Demo1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKYNGqNtQ79YfaDorRU-Vjd4j8xBfw-Ujj4InuY9uFRy3y8-GCmFfG3h-dfA-HHpFOZ20XQEHngff1K_frPM_Z_jXr7OykWRXE_HRBZZ3N_o0II1AtBujLaveeHW-MIMO6ZjhKeFkpS75u/s1600/Emre+Demo1.JPG" height="262" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
As you can see Emre has a solid start but we could probably tighten up the lighting a bit help with his render and also the overall feel of the piece and push it even further with some simple tricks.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUpn7uyK5pemW2gDR_EpjRkffdK8jnEmd19Utj3Hz5LPQu0pznZT53C27eVh2Is3NrOFDxDNcK4oW_P3wJfEr3HOinS6byuedTKQ9hz3cprbmoMfKZXPgYBLqYknEQQptm-W-4gQ7LG-Ao/s1600/Emre+Demo2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUpn7uyK5pemW2gDR_EpjRkffdK8jnEmd19Utj3Hz5LPQu0pznZT53C27eVh2Is3NrOFDxDNcK4oW_P3wJfEr3HOinS6byuedTKQ9hz3cprbmoMfKZXPgYBLqYknEQQptm-W-4gQ7LG-Ao/s1600/Emre+Demo2.JPG" height="262" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
To start with I'm putting down a couple markers to remind me where the lights are coming from. The Warm key light is coming from the left, but it feels a bit patchy at the moment. The Key is generally the most important light in the scene, so it's a good idea to make sure that it's consistent and unified on your subject.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhegkXjj7VBhjZA_Zd21rjMdSFCromRNo9yafHVXxAOLhMhkQ2nNJHwFJZ_7ydJm86cHGWqQqdXklq1uy91egUfWnOdk4VotMEqyfhurHFJJA4x89yBQbRLrFYkY4hKrugXWnbcWDbJ-od6/s1600/Emre+Demo3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhegkXjj7VBhjZA_Zd21rjMdSFCromRNo9yafHVXxAOLhMhkQ2nNJHwFJZ_7ydJm86cHGWqQqdXklq1uy91egUfWnOdk4VotMEqyfhurHFJJA4x89yBQbRLrFYkY4hKrugXWnbcWDbJ-od6/s1600/Emre+Demo3.JPG" height="262" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
On an new layer I've brightened up the light side, paying special attention to any edges or plane changes which might catch a bit of extra light. It's important to note that although I've chosen to brighten the highlight on the barrel of the gun for this demo, the important part of this step was to unify the lighted surfaces so they feel consistent. I could have stayed with his softer bright spot but it would have been a subtler look and not as obvious for the purpose of the demo.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4LyNi3QtGtnl44hhXCIRBrMplKVumovy0FErp2HR-QyPd1nDviPa9oUkgktZPqyxa2Pp4obtu6IGMfLNJBLFfEeaUC2V_zjMOIneo9m19nqnBXjNm9SI8kQzswQJuu61XtzTRlh-68K-z/s1600/Emre+Demo4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4LyNi3QtGtnl44hhXCIRBrMplKVumovy0FErp2HR-QyPd1nDviPa9oUkgktZPqyxa2Pp4obtu6IGMfLNJBLFfEeaUC2V_zjMOIneo9m19nqnBXjNm9SI8kQzswQJuu61XtzTRlh-68K-z/s1600/Emre+Demo4.JPG" height="262" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Likewise, I did a pass with the secondary light, making sure to hit all the surfaces that are facing downwards. I also gave the light a bit of overspill on the upper surfaces- this is not really accurate to the position of the light, but I just wanted to give a bit of separation from the background.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMZO5eAfahmN5UdHj0a8-djwiIuv0bwGax-iCBNJFLTQtwskjZN36KYg48kfNBwzlautDp9wFkn2Kemm5DAZGnEedA0-VDJb0Vt75Dgpq2maxaK0lziDR9wFDalBqnfp9QfvtE8y3pRtnQ/s1600/Emre+Demo5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMZO5eAfahmN5UdHj0a8-djwiIuv0bwGax-iCBNJFLTQtwskjZN36KYg48kfNBwzlautDp9wFkn2Kemm5DAZGnEedA0-VDJb0Vt75Dgpq2maxaK0lziDR9wFDalBqnfp9QfvtE8y3pRtnQ/s1600/Emre+Demo5.JPG" height="262" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
As a final step, I went through and adjusted some drawing issues, such as the ellipse on the scope and scope hood{A}(it's still off, but hopefully you get the idea), as well as fixing the perspective on the butt of the gun{C} grip. <br />
Finally, I knocked the lighting down a bit on all the front surfaces of the gun {B} since this would be receiving the least amount of lighting overall<br />
<br />
I purposely didn't address design issues this time around because as a baseline, your concepts should communicate the forms clearly-you don't want your render to be a distraction! Perhaps in future paintovers we can talk design more!I hope this has been useful!<br />

After the better part of a year working at LucasFilm on the Emmy winning show Clone Wars, I find myself back in the freelancer's seat, thanks to a helping hand from Uncle Walt and the Disney Corp.<br />
<br />
I'm not gonna lie, it's a bit daunting going from paid vacations and Jelly Roll Wednesdays to chasing down payments and doing all nighters. Sometimes, you don't find freelancing, it finds you.<br />
<br />
And on that note, I'm happy to show one of my first works to be released since being back in the driver's seat, the cover art to Blood and Bacon, available now on xbox live!<br />

Here's the evolution of the idea as it first started from the sketch phase:<br />

No one ever picks the flying jump kick/shotgun blast :-( <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
If this all seems familiar, it's because we went through all this when I did the cover for <a href="http://jimsdrawingboard.blogspot.com/2012/09/murder-miners-box-art.html" target="_blank">Murder Miners </a><br />
(which is now the #1 rated on the indie section of XBLA and one of the top sellers. Whether their awesome cover has anything to do with that, I"ll let you decide.*)<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnRytMI5fC8nbxzD9dtgpZ0YbiVj_WGGiTdRnqizmCK8EUHYA_3XoNTPV8KXXNjQhVhoA4dMdg5gU7zGI7JKDLQp6kL7pP3oe7gTQyzNUrL_gsvN7avrtucv_otzj_vuOrm5Uak8yD-Lbf/s1600/Fail+screen.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnRytMI5fC8nbxzD9dtgpZ0YbiVj_WGGiTdRnqizmCK8EUHYA_3XoNTPV8KXXNjQhVhoA4dMdg5gU7zGI7JKDLQp6kL7pP3oe7gTQyzNUrL_gsvN7avrtucv_otzj_vuOrm5Uak8yD-Lbf/s320/Fail+screen.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

<br />
Given enough time, every freelancer will eventually get a call from a very pleasant sounding person offering them a fulltime position. This person will tell them all about the fabulous benefits of working for their company, such as getting paid regularly and complimentary electricity. At this point, every freelancer must make a choice of whether or not to keep their lance free or not. If this should happen to you, I recommend you make a list. Here's an example:<br />
<br />
<b>Benefits of Freelancing:</b><br />
Make your own hours<br />
Pleasant commute <br />
No annoying office mates<br />
No stupid meetings<br />
Pants optional<br />
<br />
<b>Benefits of Accepting Fulltime work:</b><br />
Free office supplies<br />
Attractive Key Fobs and Decorative Name Placards<br />
Dirty coffee mugs mysteriously vanish from the sink and appear in the cupboards the next day. ( I'm told this is normal)<br />
<br />
I recently faced this very choice recently. After some amount of consideration, I chose to accept this opportunity, at the very least for a few months. Unfortunately that means I'll not be posting project work as much for awhile, but hopefully I'll still find the time to put up sketches and whatever backlogged art that hasn't gone up yet. I'm not going to lie, I'll miss alot of things about sitting at this desk, but on the other hand, it's a nice opportunity in a new field, so it's forward progress, so that's something.<br />
<br />
I wish you luck when you get the chance to make your own Choice.<br />
<br />

<br />
Been very busy for the last few months wrapping up some work on Dead Space 3, and I'm just finishing an interactive graphic novel as well, so stay tuned for some fancy stuff in the near future!<br />
<br />
In the meantime, Ballistic Publishing has just released EXPOSÉ 10 which you can check out <a href="http://www.ballisticpublishing.com/books/expose/expose_10/" target="_blank">here</a>! This time around, the good ol' <a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/__9pTCeTBgbI/TVQ6RQ65wFI/AAAAAAAAA14/c1LCVJPubQY/s640/Junkasaur4.jpg" target="_blank">Junkasaurus</a> made it in, as well as <a href="http://jimsdrawingboard.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2011-10-20T10:06:00-07:00&max-results=10" target="_blank">this roboty guy</a>, who got the Excellence Award in the Robotic/Cyborg category. So I got that going for me, which is nice.<br />
<br />
Finally, I did a few concepts for an upcoming tabletop game which will be up for funding soon over on Kickstarter:<br />

This was one of the more straightforward jobs I've taken on. The clients had a fairly clear idea of what they wanted so it was just a matter of getting it right. We started off with variations on flying jump kicks and various staging ideas (personally I kind of preferred the guys flying through the air). We settled on the composition of version D to work on.<br />
<br />
One interesting note, as you can see in the above sketches, things were very loose at this stage, but I'd bothered to give the zombie/monster a 'crying out in pain' expression since he was being shot. The client felt that this was making the enemy too sympathetic so they told me to make him angrier, like he was 'pissed off that he was getting killed'.<br />
<br />
In retrospect, this may be the single best bit of art direction I have ever received.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5k6zL_njegISrpt9TxaShhKS1ldnS2GbePj6acE40Qi7vktU310sLF9neytlB3o8k3mus79lhYTENp2lWV-52RFXYSa_mZLU4Mh3gMvHQHVx741TzgxHiq7VgrDBKGx9z6PpL_wD4igXG/s1600/rough+comp.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5k6zL_njegISrpt9TxaShhKS1ldnS2GbePj6acE40Qi7vktU310sLF9neytlB3o8k3mus79lhYTENp2lWV-52RFXYSa_mZLU4Mh3gMvHQHVx741TzgxHiq7VgrDBKGx9z6PpL_wD4igXG/s320/rough+comp.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Moving on, trying out a couple poses with the same staging. Although the first one had more energy and was more exiting, part of the goal was to show off the landscape a bit, so the second one won out<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKXizPespnV-QJgcBbGyNknjFzRk4OQfYkhbecHSQ3vk-bWxXk3p89PNrqg-mpQfZtfVedMc8TET5I77bEja7Dw5QguhKoqnfTeAGTLq_0ksD1AsIGlpgE23_KCUGO7HIqkPYs8suZSTkJ/s1600/final+comp+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="123" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKXizPespnV-QJgcBbGyNknjFzRk4OQfYkhbecHSQ3vk-bWxXk3p89PNrqg-mpQfZtfVedMc8TET5I77bEja7Dw5QguhKoqnfTeAGTLq_0ksD1AsIGlpgE23_KCUGO7HIqkPYs8suZSTkJ/s320/final+comp+1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
And finally, some in progress shots of the final work up<br />
<br />
All in all, a nice quick little project, and as a bonus, I'm told the game is not too bad either!<br />

<br />
Yes it's been ages. The life of a freelancer, as you know, is nothing but feast or famine, and since the start of the new year, it's been a continuous feast. While this may sound fantastic ( and to be sure, I aint complaining ) the downside of all this feasting is that when the jobs start to pile up, you have to pull alot of hours just to keep up.<br />
<br />
Now when you pull extra hours, your efficiency starts to go down due to fatigue, requiring you to work even more hours to compensate. 2 months later you're a broken shell of the artist you once were.<br />
<br />
Now the brighter ones of you out there may ask "But Jim, why don't you simply turn down new work once you've reached your capacity?" Well you've got alot of nerve. But it's a good question nonetheless, and the answer is: because a freelancer should almost never turn down work.<br />
<br />
This is so ingrained into me that by now if I even consider it, I hear a voice in my head telling me what a jerk I am. I don't know whose voice it is, but it sounds like an old fat guy, the type of guy who's always lounging around in old fashioned delis in the afternoon, usually named Sal or Connie or something. " Hey Mr. Big Shot" Sal will say, " in my day we didn't leave money on the table. We worked until there was no more work"<br />
<br />
"No, Sal, it's not like that..I only got two hands..." I think to myself, but Sal, he don't listen to nobody, so he keeps going on and on about the price of stuff and how all sports stink these days and how blessed I should feel to have work " Money on the table, big shot!"Around this time I give up and just accept the next job. <br />
<br />
So the point of all this is not to highlight my mental illness, but rather that I'm finally freed up enough to post something, and I'm choosing something from a job I really should never have taken, looking back on it all. But then again, the piece itself actually turned out alright so maybe Sal was right after all.<br />
<br />
And, now that I think of it, sports these days really do stink.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16023362896375404504noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5262627383609154324.post-54058928808436505292011-12-16T11:35:00.000-08:002011-12-16T11:37:06.869-08:00Rounding out the yearAs usual in the life of a freelancer, this year has been a wild ride. New clients bringing new challenges, as well as trusted clients from the past returning to recreate some magic. Insanely busy and deadly slow. Onsite, Offsite, and halfway around the world. Teaching, learning and creating. All in all, not bad.<br />
<br />
To wrap things up, here's a piece that was a departure for me in many ways, the most notable of which was that to create it, I went back to my old nemesis, Corel Painter.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_RaqpgiteNLSYON_7CPsFKOISb7hB7gl1yXwsl5UZkeNP-47gc_UIiyoceXgx7BhkzeH0rN1ash-sywvrJoFuDsbl2JFCLwzQeqliwu9My0-w9lrvwCLFYyQAnF1vPnDIPzMH_UMHrA9r/s1600/FIinal+03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_RaqpgiteNLSYON_7CPsFKOISb7hB7gl1yXwsl5UZkeNP-47gc_UIiyoceXgx7BhkzeH0rN1ash-sywvrJoFuDsbl2JFCLwzQeqliwu9My0-w9lrvwCLFYyQAnF1vPnDIPzMH_UMHrA9r/s320/FIinal+03.jpg" width="256" /></a></div><br />
<br />
more after the jump...<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<br />
I've always had a love/hate relationship with Painter. The brushstrokes are exquisite, and very tunable. The blending that happens when two colors meet fairly approaches what actually happens with two pigmented liquids. There's many things to love, but for those who began their digital careers in photoshop ( as many do), the interface is a foreign land that does not suffer strangers gladly. More importantly, for the realities of a production environment, Painter just does not have the capabilities required to do many of the tasks that need to be done.<br />
<br />
For that reason I've neglected using it for many years, but the nature of this commission inspired me to go in a different direction, so I started by laying down the rough in Painter, then bringing it into CS3 for refinement and adjustment, then back again for a new round of brushstrokes. Many rounds of this later, I have a renewed interest in the joys of Painter, and I look forward to using more in the coming year.<br />
<br />
All the best to everyone out thereAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16023362896375404504noreply@blogger.com2
